Today, because I had plenty of time and had the big lens set up, there wasn't much about in the garden, just the usual suspects, even the Goldfinch were few and far between. A Dunnock wandered quite close to the window offering a good photo opportunity even in the poor light. A Robin came back and forth to the bird table while a Blackbird kept popping up everywhere.

I'm curious: what focal length lens do you use for photos like these? You're dealing with quite small subjects, presumably rather a long way away...
Just being nosy because it's a kind of photography I sometimes think I woule try if I had adequate equipment for it, and it seems to me you need a pretty good quality telephoto lens for pictures like these.
Hi Tim, I use mostly f6.3 or f8 if the light allows a fast enough shutter speed at that setting. Obviously having a 500mm lens helps but I use the same settings on the 200mm lens.
Well done on capturing your mouse. Nice clear bird shots - particularly like the sunlit ones, 2nd Robin and the Blackbird.
Good pics - especially that Blackbird!
I've also got a resident Wood Mouse who gets through amazing amounts of Sunflower Hearts which are in the (caged) ground feeder. Fast - like lightening!! So well done for capturing it.
...all lovely photos, but that first Robin, my goodness, what a sweetie!! Just adorable. I saw the little mouse on Snowbabies and was happy to see him here also...he it too cute.
Thanks for satisfying my curiosity! The longest I can manage is 200 mm, and that's if I use a 100 mm lens with a doubling attachment.
Hey Tim,
Beautiful, Beautiful shots!! I totally love your bird pics. Very crisp and simply put lovely. I especially like the little mouse. Just out of no where...just there. Made me laugh out loud!!!
