Female House Sparrow
Still getting large numbers of Starlings, especially if I put mealworms out, they arrive in seconds and the mealworms are gone in even less time!
Starling
Had six Collared Dove at once on Sunday, word must be getting round that we're spending a fortune at the bird food shop.
Collared Dove
Jackdaws drop in now and again, everything else seems to stand off a little until they leave, but when the Magpie arrives, everything disappears! They do look kinda evil!
Magpie
We bought one of those metal pole type contraptions the other week, which supports water, fat balls, garden mix feeder and a covered tray of assorted goodies. The Starlings and House Sparrows are liking it but not seen much else go near it yet.
Mealworms On A Pole
Today I've erected an 8 foot pole 5 feet from the window, I got on the step ladders and bashed it in about 2 foot so it's nice and sturdy. To this I have attached an old washing liquid holder filled with mealworms, the idea being to get close up shots of the smaller birds. I'm hoping that the Starlings won't be able get at them because of the shape and the Robins along with other smaller garden birds get to find out that we do actually offer mealworms.
Paul.

Nice images. Looks like you are going to have lots of visitors. I love the collared dove image where you can see all those individual feathers.
Lovely photos. I've only seen goldfinches here once so far this year but I suppose it's early days yet.
...your female house sparrow photo is sweet and I think the Magpie is cool, but now that you mention it...those eyes are a bit ominous! Mealworms crawling around (the live ones you have to keep in the fridge) totally creep me out, but our little chickadees love them. It will be interesting to see how it goes. Five feet is good viewing!
Hi Paul. I'll be very interested to see how the new mealworm feeder performs & will drop by for updates.
Cheers Frank.
Great pictures Paul. I've never noticed any blue on a Magpie before.
Similar quantities of bird visitors here. Lots of House Sparrows and Starlings which, like yours, are grabbing food faster than it can be put out! Just a single Goldfinch these days and pairs of Blue Tits and Great Tits.
Wonderful series of bird images. I like the image of collared dove, they are not easy to get on camera this close. Well done
Great Blog with fantastic Images,
real treat to view.
John.
Well done on the magpie shot - not an easy bird with the contrasting dark and light colours.
Fingers crossed your "smaller" visitors have feasted on the mealworms.
