Early In The Garden

Up at stupid o'clock this morning, for a Saturday anyway, so I just took advantage of rare early sunshine and set up the big lens at the kitchen window and equipped myself with a strong coffee.

The only bird I've seen taking the mealworms from the new feeder is a Magpie! It lands on top of the pole, jumps off, flaps like mad in an attempt to hover, flicks a few out and then lands on the grass to pick them up. He was there again this morning but disappeared as soon as he saw my ugly mug through the window.

Had a few other visitors through the hour or so I was keeping watch, no Goldfinch though, I think they must come later, I know they normally turn up at tea time during the week. Here's a few of the mornings highlights.

Off to see if I can catch a thieving Magpie on film...

There's something special in the colouring with early and late sunlight. Much more even and less harsh shadows.
Lovely photos, especially the two woodpigeons and the sparrow on the feeder.

...that dunnock is a cute little bird. (Had to laugh at your "stupid o'clock" remark!)

Great pictures of some of your backyard birds. I don't know what it is about the Blackbirds on your side of the Atlantic, but I love them. Yes they are ordinary in color but different from ours.

Thanks all for the lovely comments. Mealworm update.. The Starlings have found them and ate the lot, greedy beggers! Time to come up with a plan B!
